A Night Full of Hope

This article was actually written on the 23rd night of Ramadan 2025, about March 20th-ish. Perhaps, for some, this night is full of hopes and prayers. Especially for those with great desires. Here, Ramadan always teaches us to focus on the greater good, namely, receiving Allah's blessings, one of which is Laylatul Qadr. This night could be the best moment in our lives.

The atmostphere of spending the night at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta

From several sources I've gathered, this is why Laylatul Qadr should not be missed.

  1. The reward is equivalent to 83 years. Many have probably heard that Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months. Roughly translated, that means one night of worship can be equivalent to 83 years of worship. Imagine, that one night can replace all our efforts and hopes. What if we take advantage of it seriously?
  2. Angels bring mercy. Tonight, it is said that angels descend to earth bringing mercy. It seems like when you pray on the night of Laylat al-Qadr, your heart will feel calmer and more devout. So, if you feel like your prayers tonight feel more connected, it could be a sign that you're in a very special moment.
  3. A night full of peace. Laylat al-Qadr is a night filled with serenity and peace, even until dawn. Just like me, who has a big wish, tonight could be the best time to ask for prayers, make supplications, and start a new chapter. What are you hoping for? Allah is All-Hearing.

When is Laylat al-Qadr?

Some say the 27th night is the most potent, but who knows, this 23rd night could also be our Laylat al-Qadr? What's clear is that there's no exact date; Allah deliberately keeps it secret to increase our enthusiasm for worship. Don't wait for a "definite" moment, because every night of Ramadan offers the same opportunity to receive His blessings.

Myths and facts.

Many stories circulate about the signs of Laylat al-Qadr. Some say the sky is clear, the air is cool, and the sea is calm. Logic, conspiracy theories, and multiple interpretations are everywhere. But one thing's clear: don't focus too much on myths. What matters is the quality of our worship. Tonight, there may not be any obvious physical signs, but if we worship with sincere intentions, I think that could be a sign.

Clear skies and cool air? This is a fact. Why a fact? Laylatul Qadr is a night filled with tranquility and coolness. It's neither hot nor cold. What's most noticeable is the calm and coolness.

Only for those who have done good deeds? This is a myth. Regardless of the past, tonight, Laylatul Qadr is our opportunity to return to His path.

What matters most is our worship. That's what will truly bring peace.

What should we do on Laylatul Qadr?

  1. Night prayer (qiyamul lail). There's nothing more powerful than waking up in the middle of the night to pray Tahajud, especially if we're really trying to make our hopes and dreams come true. On Laylatul Qadr, try to increase our worship. Allah will see our efforts and good intentions.
  2. Read the Quran devoutly. The Quran is our guide to life. Try reading it again and meditating on its meaning. Don't just make it a routine, but truly find peace in your heart and direction in your life.
  3. Pray, pray, and pray again. Tonight, prayer is a powerful weapon. Not only for ourselves, but also for those closest to us and those we love. The prayer taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني In latin: "Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwafa'fu'annii" ("O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, You love to forgive, so forgive me").
  4. Charity and almsgiving (sadaqah). There is nothing more beautiful than sharing on this blessed night. No matter how small or large, any form of almsgiving can be a door to sustenance and multiply rewards. Even small acts like sharing snacks or helping your parents can be extraordinary deeds.

Laylatul Qadr is a golden opportunity.

Laylatul Qadr comes only once every Ramadan. Amidst all our desires, whether for worldly matters like careers or education, a more blessed life, or greater happiness, this is the perfect time to pray and strive to the fullest, especially if done overnight in the mosque. This includes performing voluntary prayers, both individually and in congregation.

This is also a reminder to myself, who is still learning, that we shouldn't wait for a certain night. Instead, maximize each of the last 10 nights until they are complete. Who knows, tonight might be the best night of our lives. So, don't waste this opportunity to draw closer to the Almighty. Believe it or not, Allah SWT loves us that much.

Barakallahu fiikum.
